Track Rating ..
[RWD version 1 ] Circuit takling in five tops; Carran and its 3 subsidiary tops and Knockantooreen. Similar route to Simon3's track 1964 but with a different ascent and taking in Knockantooreen.

The track starts from a farmyard at W043 689 - I asked permission of the young farmer which was readily granted. I met him again as I re-entered the yard at the end of the walk and the slow (pink) part of the track shows where we stood talking for about 15 minutes, solving the world's problems. There are a large number of dogs on the property which he was very quick to call off, explaining that sometimes he didn't trust them himself - forewarned is forearmed.

The ascent involves heading uphill on tarmac for a couple of hundred metres, before taking the track to the left of a two-storey farmhouse, which leads towards Carran FNT. This track may not have been there when Simon3 walked as his track is further east, but it is very definitely the easiest way towards the col between Carrans FNT and NET.

Around the Carran tops is fairly straightforward, but care should be taken on the descent from Knockantooreen which encounters some steep ground - my course was more direct than Simon3's, which also meant a river crossing and the loss of some height which had to be regained - Simon3 avoided these by staying further east - perhaps a better bet.
